Kolasib's Vairengte and Bilkhawthlir produce premium Queen pineapples but post-harvest loss runs 30–40%. A small juice and dehydrated-fruit unit captures the surplus and sells juice and snack SKUs to mainland metros.

Kolasib's Vairengte cluster is one of NE India's most concentrated pineapple-growing belts. Queen-variety pineapples here are sweeter and smaller than Karnataka's Kew, ideal for premium retail. The constraint: harvest windows compress, post-harvest loss is brutal, and mainland prices collapse at peak. A processing unit (pulp + juice + dehydrated rings + jam) absorbs the surplus and creates shelf-stable SKUs.
Capex of ₹12–22 lakh covers a small pulper, juicer, dehydrator, and packing line. PMFME at 35% subsidy is built for exactly this; MIDH adds horticultural infrastructure support. The hard parts: short harvest season (8–10 weeks; you process most of your annual volume in that window), refrigerated logistics out of NE (ship via Silchar to Kolkata; cost premium), and building D2C distribution against established processors. Realistic margin window: ₹35–55 per kg pineapple converted into ₹120–₹220 retail value of juice or dried product. Start with pulp/juice (lower complexity); dehydrated rings come in year 2.
