Khowai is the heart of Tripuri tribal handloom — Pachra (women's wraparound) and Risa (chest-cloth) production. A producer cluster cooperative scaling traditional weaves for contemporary metro retail captures the heritage-textile premium.

Khowai's tribal weavers (Tripuri, Reang, Jamatia communities) have produced Pachra and Risa for centuries — distinctive horizontal-stripe textiles with intricate borders. Production is currently household-scale, sold via middlemen to local markets at low margins. A cooperative organising 40–60 women weavers, providing improved looms and shared dye access, sells finished products via D2C and metro boutique retail at 4–6× the local margin.
Capex of ₹4–12 lakh covers shared looms, raw material stock, and basic packaging. NHDP (National Handloom Development Programme) supports cluster development; the NER Textile scheme adds capex grants. Hard parts: design adaptation for contemporary buyers without diluting the tribal identity, certification for handloom mark, and building 2–3 metro D2C buyer relationships. Start with stoles and dupattas (highest premium per unit); ranges follow.
