₹1,979 cr
Term loans for agriculture & allied activities
₹560 cr
Crop production, maintenance & marketing
₹437 cr

West Tripura, home to the state capital Agartala, has a total priority-sector credit potential of about 3,468 Cr for 2023-24. The plan is unusually town-heavy: MSME leads at 1,979 Cr (roughly 57%) while agriculture is 1,028 Cr (about 30%), with the rest in housing, education and other segments.
On the farm side, the biggest openings are in livestock and fisheries. Poultry farming alone carries 279 Cr of potential, with dairy at 67 Cr and sheep/goat/piggery at 52 Cr, reflecting how popular piggery, poultry and fishery are as village livelihoods. Crop loans add 437 Cr for paddy (including Jhum rice), pulses, oilseeds and vegetables, and plantation & horticulture offers 65 Cr for the district's fruit crops — pineapple, lemon, jackfruit, mango, banana and litchi. Fisheries add 70 Cr as ponds are taken up by SHGs and fish-farmer societies.
Beyond the farm, the Bodhjungnagar industrial complex near Agartala (Growth Centre, Export Promotion Park, Food Park, Bamboo Park and Rubber Park) anchors bamboo handicrafts and small-scale rubber and tea processing. Housing (291 Cr) and food & agro processing (12 Cr) round out the opportunity.
The PLP's own warnings for anyone building here: too few storage and processing units, weak transport links, a need for better cattle and pig breeds and feed, fragmented land holdings with poor land records, and inadequate irrigation and post-harvest infrastructure.
What the plan promotes
- Animal Husbandry is a State Government thrust area with a credit potential of 397.44 Cr for 2023-24; farmers encouraged to set up mini dairies and expand poultry and piggery
- Poultry farming is the single largest allied opportunity at 278.56 Cr, reflecting the district's popular poultry, dairy and goatery activities
- Fisheries potential of 69.87 Cr as existing ponds and water bodies are taken up by SHGs and fish farmer societies for livelihood income
- Plantation, horticulture and sericulture credit of 65.28 Cr for fruit crops grown in the district: pineapple, lemon, jackfruit, mango, banana, litchi, papaya and guava
- Bamboo-based handicrafts and small-scale rubber and tea processing units, anchored by the Bodhjungnagar multi-industry complex (Growth Centre, EPIP, Food Park, Bamboo Park, Rubber Park) near Agartala
- Micro Enterprise Development Programmes (MEDP) run through NGOs for mosquito net making, tailoring, jute products and toy/doll making
Gaps the plan names
- Lack of storage and processing units in the district, limiting value addition to farm produce
- Inadequate transportation facilities constraining market access
- Requirement for improved breeds of cattle and pigs and better concentrated feed
- Fragmented land holdings and lack of mutation of land records make it hard for marginal farmers to access institutional credit
- Inadequate irrigation facility and weak post-harvest infrastructure inhibiting growth in ground-level credit
